Veterinary Technicians, also known as Vet Techs, provide day-to-day and emergency animal care under the supervision of a Veterinarian.

Vet Techs play an important role in veterinary medicine. They can perform a range of duties that can include performing check-ups, and assisting during surgery for small, large, and exotic animals. They also play a critical role in patient management, laboratory procedures, and procedural management.

Program Overview

The Veterinary Technician program is a 24-month Associate Degree program designed to prepare students to become multi-skilled Vet Techs working in animal hospitals, private clinics including general, emergency, and specialty care, animal shelters and more.

Through our vet tech program, you’ll learn essential skills in animal nursing, lab procedures, and diagnostic imaging. At our vet tech school, we emphasize learning by doing, so you’ll spend time working with animals in supervised clinical settings. MedQuest also provides the foundation you need for your vet tech certification, blending theory with practical training to prepare you for the real world.

Upon completion of the program and meeting all of the course requirements, students will receive a Veterinary Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree and will be prepared to apply to take the Veterinary Technology National Examination (VTNE) through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

Upon successful completion of the national examination, students will be eligible to submit for licensure by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners (KBVE).

MedQuest College’s Veterinary Technician program educates students to perform various clinical and patient care responsibilities in the veterinary industry. Students enrolled in the Veterinary Technician program can expect to learn the following topics:

Identifying the different components of the skeletal and muscular systems of canine, feline, bovine, and equine.
Basic comparative anatomy of domestic animals with an emphasis on the structure and function of the major organ systems.
Clinical chemistry tests, automatic clinical chemistry testing methods, standard veterinary clinical microbiology testing, parasitology of companion and livestock animals with emphasis on zoonotic parasites, and standard veterinary cytology test.
Patient preparation, anesthetic agents and adjuncts and their effect on a body system. Anesthetic equipment, troubleshooting, and maintenance are discussed as well as workplace safety involved with administering anesthesia.
Veterinary dentistry. Topics covered include oral anatomy, terminology, instrumentation, and dental prophylaxis for companion, exotic, and equine species.

Prior to graduation, students are required to complete an externship under the guidance of area experts. During this externship, students will refine the skills learned on campus as well as work directly with patients for real-life experience.
